Why I Won’t Read Fifty Shades of Grey

E. L. James’ book Fifty Shades of Grey, a bestseller though it may be, has apparently failed to impress the French, it has been condemned as a manual for sex torture and is poorly written according to some sources. Noman Ansari of The Express Tribune even says it is poorly written and that “to a surprising degree”.

And yet women apparently love the book. Zoe Williams ends her review saying “Oh what am I doing? You’re going to read it. Of course you’re going to read it. You’ve probably already read it.” So I’m thinking that maybe I am one of a rare species, as I have not read E. L. James’ bestseller and do not intend to do so either.

I am an avid bookreader. But precisely because I love books and enjoy lots of them, I find I have more urgent reads to get through than this. The world abounds with great books. Reading the reviews of E.L. James’s trilogy may have been entertaining, but given the overall impression of these reviews, I am not banking on a great experience reading the actual E. L. James Fifty Shades trilogy. I have been duly warned.

Instead, it’s back to my stacks of books waiting to be read and enjoyed: everything from classic literature to factual books on all topics thinkable. Anything but smutty, poorly written housewife porn.
