Men awarding men the Nobel Prize

Swedish daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reports today and comments on the fact that the Nobel Prize has been given mainly to men (since 1901, 795 and 44 women have received it); Meanwhile, in the bodies that award the various Nobel Prizes, men are also in majority: 684 members are men but only 87 are women. In organisational theory this is called homosocial reproduction and means that men favour men when e.g. appointing managers and other top-level positions. And Nobel Award winners too, it seems.

In what is starting to sound like an all too common misinterpretation of the status quo, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy Peter Englund says that working actively for increased gender equity within the Swedish Academy by increasing the number of women by quotas is not desirable as this would cheapen the achievements of the women themselves. However, as Johanna Ögren, co-founder of the book blog bokhora notes, males are currently  favouring males for the Nobel Prize in precisely this very way, and apparently it is not cheapening male author achievements…
