School results down to motivation and hard work

A new report by the Swedish National Agency for Education shows the importance of self-confidence, stamina and self-motivation among pupils in order to achieve good school results. The report argues that it is these things, together with support, competent teachers and high expectations that lead to good school performance among school children, rather than inherent aptitude.

Playing down the importance of inherent aptitude (however that is to be measured anyway) brings hope to everyone. However, it also brings to the fore the importance of hard work and commitment, not just by pupils themselves but by teachers, schools in general and parents.
